Restoring Files
This guide explains how to restore files and folders from SalvageData Backup.
When should you restore?
Common scenarios: - Accidentally deleted a file - File was overwritten - System crash - Ransomware or malware incident
Important safety note
If you suspect ransomware or malware: - Do NOT restore files to their original location - Always restore to a new folder - Contact SalvageData support if unsure
Restore workflow
Step 1: Open the restore wizard
- Open SalvageData Backup
- Select Restore
- Choose the appropriate Storage Vault
Step 2: Select backup snapshot
- Choose a Protected Item
- Select a snapshot date:
- Latest (default)
- Older snapshot (for previous versions)
Step 3: Select files and folders
- Browse folders manually, or
- Use search to locate specific files
You can restore: - Individual files - Entire folders - Full protected items
Step 4: Choose restore destination
You will be prompted to choose where restored files go:
Recommended options
- Restore to a new folder
- Restore to desktop or external drive
Advanced option
- Restore to original location (only if safe)
Step 5: Start restore
- Confirm restore settings
- Click Start Restore
- Leave the computer powered on
Restore progress will be displayed in the app.
Restore performance notes
- Large restores may take time
- Ensure sufficient free disk space
- Restoring many small files can be slower than a few large files
After restore completes
- Verify restored files
- Confirm file integrity
- If restoring after malware, scan restored files before use
Common restore issues
Restore is slow
- Internet speed affects restore performance
- Try restoring to local disk first
File not found
- Check older snapshots
- Confirm the correct protected item was selected
Restore failed
- Restart the app and retry
- Contact support with the error message
